Shortblock Overhaul

At YAF Engineering, we support the condition-based maintenance (CBM) concept as a flexible and cost-effective strategy for engine upkeep — particularly in the following cases:

  • When annual running hours are relatively low
  • When the engine is used intermittently or under short-term power contracts
  • When budget constraints prevent full replacement of components according to OEM schedules

Unlike fixed overhaul intervals, CBM focuses on evaluating the actual condition of engine parts, especially high-cost components, to determine whether reuse is technically safe and economically viable.

The CBM process includes:

  • Thorough cleaning and visual inspection
  • Dimensional and structural assessment
  • Dye penetrant or ultrasonic testing for surface and internal flaws
  • Functional checks, where applicable

Critical components typically assessed under CBM include:

  • Cylinder heads
  • Pistons and piston crowns
  • Cylinder liners
  • Connecting rods
  • Fuel pumps and injectors
  • Crankshafts and camshafts

By reusing components that remain within acceptable tolerances, operators can significantly reduce overhaul costs while maintaining engine safety and performance.

At YAF Engineering, we combine advanced diagnostic tools, engineering expertise, and strict adherence to OEM standards to help clients make informed decisions about extending the service life of their equipment — without compromising reliability.
